Asia Cement Extends Ecological Restoration Beyond Mining Areas, Sharing Butterfly Habitat Restoration Success at Geo-Mining Open Day

The 2026 "Geo-Mining and Disaster Prevention Life Circle – Geo-Mining Open Day" took place on October 2 at the New Taipei Office of the Geological Survey and Mining Management Agency, Ministry of Economic Affairs. Through public lectures, poster displays, multimedia tours, and a geo-mining marketplace, the event guided visitors to understand geology, mining, disaster prevention, and environmental sustainability from a daily-life perspective. Asia Cement Corporation (ACC) brought its ecological restoration experience from Hualien to the event, setting up an ecological exhibit to share its achievements in mine site restoration and biodiversity conservation.

ACC featured "butterflies and stick insects" as the highlight of its display, bringing observation results from its Hualien Ecological Park to Taipei. Through live physical displays and interactive explanations, the exhibition presented the complete life cycle of butterflies—from egg, larva, and pupa to adult. ACC also shared techniques for creating butterfly habitats by strategically arranging host plants and nectar plants to provide essential conditions for feeding, breeding, and growth.

During the event, a female Lime Butterfly was spotted visiting the exhibition area and perching near the host plants to search for a suitable spot to lay eggs for the next generation. Ho Tzu-le, an employee at the Asia Cement Ecological Park who led on-site guided tours, explained that creating a butterfly habitat is not merely about planting random flowers and grass. Instead, it requires configuring suitable host plants for larvae to feed on and nectar plants for adult butterflies to feed on, based on the specific needs of butterflies at different life stages, thereby constructing an environment tailored for shelter, foraging, and reproduction.

Accumulating expertise in butterfly habitat restoration at its Hualien Ecological Park, ACC has gradually expanded its ecological conservation initiatives across Taiwan, establishing 46 butterfly habitats to date. Through ex-situ restoration, ACC has extended the ecological restoration experience gained from its Hualien mine site to various settings, including school campuses and local communities. By customizing habitats according to local environmental conditions, ACC ensures that restoration efforts continue to flourish in different locations, amplifying the impact of biodiversity conservation.

Lee Kun-yen, President of Asia Cement, personally visited the Geo-Mining Open Day to support the ecological exhibit and environmental education outreach. He stated that ecological conservation should not be confined within mining areas; more importantly, restoration experiences should be integrated into daily life so that more people can understand the relationship between ecology and the land.

Moving forward, Asia Cement will continue to promote biodiversity conservation and environmental education, deepening its ecological restoration achievements and helping more people explore the possibilities of harmonious coexistence between humans and nature, starting with a better understanding of the land.
