Asia Cement Achieves SBTi Commitment on Carbon Emissions Reduction Every Year

Asia Cement Corporation (ACC) has once again received international recognition for its outstanding sustainability efforts at the 2024 Global Corporate Sustainability Award (GCSA). The company received the prestigious awards for Best Practices Award and Bronze Award for Sustainability Reporting. Ms. Doris Wu, Executive Vice President of Asia Cement, stated that ACC is the only cement company in Taiwan to consistently meet its Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi) commitments year after year. In 2024, the company even outperformed its first-stage target set for 2025. This honor has once again affirmed ACC's unwavering dedication to achieving net-zero carbon emissions and served as a catalyst for further advancements. ACC has already initiated its second-stage SBTi carbon reduction project, focusing on strengthening carbon management and driving technological innovation to support global climate initiatives with actions and achievements. .

ACC was one of the four cement companies globally with commitment to contain the temperature increase well-below 2°C scenario with science-based carbon reduction target as specific response to climate control.  According to the ACC’s commitment, with 2019 as the base year, ACC, including Taipei head office, Hsin-Chu Plant and Hualien Plant, will reduce emission of cementitious product, in terms of Scope I and Scope II, by 8% by 2025, by 26.4% by 2030, following 1.5°C path, 45.7% by 2035 and eventually reached net-zero by 2050. Since base year, ACC has reduced carbon emission by over 400 thousand mt and become the role model of the industry with its outstanding achievement on reduction of emission.

As Taiwan prepares to implement a carbon tax in 2025, ACC has been proactively deploying strategies to reduce emissions through waste resource utilization, energy efficiency improvements, and the expansion of circular economy initiatives in this era where carbon comes with a price. The company has been actively assisting local governments and private enterprises in disposal of various types of waste material, including steel slag, mineral fines, coal bottom ash, wastewater sludge, decommissioned wind turbine blades, and refrigerants. By assembling a cross-functional team of experts in mechanics, instrumentation, and manufacturing, ACC has developed advanced feeding, crushing, conveying, and calcining equipment to ensure the smooth utilization of diverse waste materials in the cement manufacturing process. This has significantly enhanced production efficiency and resulted in substantial cost savings of NT$150 million in raw material and NT$290 million in fuel from 2021 to 2023.

In terms of manufacturing technology of low-carbon cement , ACC is advancing smart manufacturing and product transformation by developing cements with lower clinker input, such as masonry cement, Portland limestone cement, and ternary blended cement. The Company is also collaborating with the Industrial Technology Research Institute to develop carbon capture and utilization (CCU) technology. By recarbonizing industrial waste, such as steel slag and waste concrete, with carbon dioxide, ACC is producing regenerated aggregates with negative carbon emissions. These aggregates will be used in the production of low-carbon concrete in collaboration with its subsidiary, Ya-tung Ready-Mixed Concrete, injecting green energy into the construction materials industry.

ACC emphasizes its commitment to innovation and sustainability, aiming to set an example for corporate carbon reduction and fulfill its corporate social responsibility. By taking concrete actions, ACC is driving the green building materials industry towards a future with lower carbon emissions and higher performance.
