Asia Cement Achieves Silver Rating for Net-Zero Efforts, Two Years Ahead of Schedule

Asia Cement has once again reached a significant milestone in its net-zero initiatives, securing Silver rating from the prestigious Net-Zero Mark certification by the Taiwan Alliance for Net Zero Emission for the third time. This marks a significant leap from the previous Green rating, strengthening Asia Cement's position as a leading enterprise in development of low-carbon manufacturing. Chao-Yu Wang, Assistant Vice President and Spokesperson of Asia Cement, expressed gratitude for the recognition, stating that this honor affirms the company's dedication to low-carbon transformation and the promotion of renewable energy. It also signifies a crucial step forward in Asia Cement's pursuit of net-zero carbon emissions.

Asia Cement's net-zero initiatives encompass entire company, from Taipei headquarters to branch offices in Hualien, Kaohsiung, and Taichung, with a collective commitment to carbon reduction in line with the 2030 net-zero goal for headquarters and branches. Notably, in 2023, the company's headquarters and three major service centers achieved a remarkable 40.7% reduction in carbon emissions comparing to the baseline year of 2022, two years ahead of schedule. This achievement was made possible through various measures, including improved lighting and air conditioning systems, the use of energy-efficient vehicles, energy-saving elevators, and the utilization of renewable energy. Asia Cement acquired 213 renewable energy certificates in 2023, aiming for complete decarbonization of electricity at headquarter office and branch offices by 2030. Additionally, the company is actively exploring suitable locations to construct solar power facilities, further accelerating its net-zero progress.

Committed to being a global leader in green building materials, Asia Cement continuously innovates low-carbon manufacturing technologies. The Hualien plant has pioneered the "5C+1C Net-Zero Pathway" strategy  by reducing carbon emissions through clinker, cement, concrete, re-carbonation, and construction and design. Furthermore, Asia Cement is developing carbon capture and utilization (CCUS) technology, employing waste materials as carbon absorbers to recycle carbon dioxide generated during the production, promoting carbon cycling, and supporting the sustainable development of the construction industry.

In terms of circular economy, the Hualien plant has gradually used 1.75 million tons of alternative raw materials and 135,000 tons of alternative fuels since its operation. These materials are sourced from various public and private entities, including solar power plants, wastewater treatment plants, and steel mills. This has effectively reduced the consumption of natural resources and enhanced overall industrial resource circulation efficiency. Asia Cement also strengthens its leading position in environmental protection through recovering waste heat for power generation and the production of low-carbon cement.

Yatung Readymixed Concrete, a subsidiary of Asia Cement, has also achieved remarkable results, earning the "Bronze Label" certification. Through energy-saving measures, optimized transportation vehicle scheduling, and the purchase of international carbon credits, the company has reduced carbon emissions by 10% in its offices and eight owned plants, setting an example for other enterprises.

Chao-Yu Wang emphasized that the upgraded net-zero labels for both Asia Cement and Yatung Readymixed Concrete serve as solid evidence of the companies' active pursuit of low-carbon innovation. Looking forward, Asia Cement will continue to prioritize sustainability and drive the green revolution in the global building materials industry, creating a cleaner and better environment for future generations.
