Asia Cement Leads in Low-Carbon Cement Products

Securing New Sustainability Milestones

Asia Cement Corporation (ACC) was awarded a gold and a bronze medal at the 2024 Taiwan Sustainability Action Awards, TSAA, on August 8th, recognizing its outstanding achievements in low-carbon sustainability and biodiversity. Chang Chih-peng, Vice President and Chief Plant Manager of Asia Cement, who represented the company at the award ceremony, stated that ACC is committed to responsible production and low-carbon procurement. Through various innovative measures, the company has successfully reduced greenhouse gas emissions and depletion of natural mineral, achieving significant environmental benefits. In the face of global climate change and environmental challenges, ACC will continue to deepen its green transformation, strengthen resource recycling, and contribute more to building a better future.

ACC has won a gold award this year for its "Low-Carbon Transformation, Together with Cement" initiative, setting a new industrial benchmark. ACC's journey towards low-carbon transformation began in 2011, even before the European Chamber of Commerce  Taiwan (ECCT) launched its Low Carbon Initiative (LCI) while ACC introduced innovative low-carbon masonry cement. After years of research and development, ACC's team successfully developed masonry cement that can reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 18%, making it the sole producer of this type of low-carbon cement. To promote this product, ACC's promotion team has been actively engaging with construction sites and exhibitions nationwide. In 2023 alone, ACC participated in 77 events, including the Taipei Building Show, and its annual sales of masonry cement exceeded 27,000 tons, representing a 3.5 times increase compared to 2022.

According to statistics, by replacing Ordinary Portland Cement with masonry cement, ACC effectively reduced greenhouse gas emissions by 3,699 tons in 2023, decreased the depletion of natural minerals by 2,292 tons and coal by 654 tons. Simultaneously, the air pollutant emissions per unit of cementing material have significantly decreased. These data fully demonstrate ACC's core capabilities and contributions in green and low-carbon initiatives.

ACC has been actively engaging in tripartite negotiations involving industry, government, and academia. In early 2024, working together with the Taiwan Cement Manufacturer’s Association, ACC successfully advocated for a 50% reduction in the commodity tax on low-carbon cement, down to NT$220, thereby creating a favorable market environment for low-carbon products. ACC believes that low-carbon products have immense potential, and it will continue to research and produce low-carbon cement for various applications, staying at the forefront of the low-carbon wave and contributing to global sustainable development.

In addition, ACC won a bronze medal for its "Habitat Creation to Restore the Butterfly Kingdom" project. Due to economic development, Taiwan has experienced significant habitat destruction, leading to a sharp decline in butterfly populations. Through its planned habitat restoration projects, ACC has addressed the issues of habitat fragmentation, isolation, and shrinkage, promoting the diverse distribution and exchange of flora and fauna. ACC has established a dedicated environmental education and ecology team at its Hualien plant, providing professional expertise in mine vegetation and greening, sharing its ecological operation experience, and creating an ACC ecological park. This park not only promotes environmental education but also serves as a starting point for the large-scale "Taiwan-wide Butterfly Restoration Project." ACC has already helped establish 34 butterfly habitats across Taiwan, with the aim of connecting these points into a network to eventually form a Taiwan-wide butterfly corridor, restoring Taiwan's reputation as a butterfly kingdom and achieving a harmonious coexistence between humans and nature.
