Asia Cement Partners with Tamkang University to Ignite Students' Passion for Chemistry in Rural Areas

A brightly colored light truck, which can be transformed into a mobile stage and laboratory, has recently made its way to Asia Cement's Hualien plant. This unique vehicle, designed by Tamkang University Center for Science Education, is bringing the magic of chemistry to students under 9th grade  in Hualien. Through interactive experiments and  demonstrations, the program aims to induce students' curiosity and enthusiasm for science.

Cement industry, as an indispensable component of modern construction, relies heavily on chemistry which plays a pivotal role from manufacturing and application thereof to  performance enhancement. To enrich the educational resources of local schools, Asia Cement, in partnership with Tamkang University, has launched the "Chemistry On The Go" program which introduce to students from near Hualien plant the fascinating world of cement, from mineral stories to chemical knowledge and building material history. The Tamkang team also introduces three innovative experiments, including "Inorganic Zongzi," which showcases the low-carbon footprint of masonry cement. Through the illustration of comics and text, students learn about chemical elements, cement composition, and the curing process and making small souvenirs in the meantime. “Colorful Easter Eggs” allows the participants' to create unique easter eggs with their original creativity while undertstanding the difference between cement and gypsum and the science behind coating technique. “My Very Own Hand Wash” introduced surfactants and other ingredients commonly used in cleansing products sold in retails market. Students learn about chemistry from products easily accessible in their life by making hand wash with their own formula. All products from the experiments can be brought back and kept by the students. The students can also review the knowledge acquired while sharing with their family and friends.

Students participating in the program have expressed their excitement about the engaging and novel approach to chemistry, particularly the hands-on experiments. Many have realized that chemistry is not just about dry symbols but a fascinating world filled with wonder. Wang Bo-Cheng, director of Tamkang University Center for Science Education, emphasized that the " Chemistry On The Go " program introduces new experiments every year, often inspired by current events or local industries. The goal is to make science education more relatable and engaging and encourage students to explore chemistry beyond textbooks.

Asia Cement President  Lee , Kun-yen highlighted the importance of the partnership with Tamkang University, which not only enhances students' understanding of chemistry but also fosters appreciation for the role of building materials in daily life. By collaborating with academic institutions, the company aims to create more learning opportunities for students and cultivate a new generation of scientifically literate individuals.

Tamkang University's " Chemistry On The Go " program has reached over 750 schools since 2011. With Asia Cement's support, the program continues to deepen the collaboration between industry and academia, providing a more dynamic and engaging learning environment for younger generation. By promoting chemistry education and innovation, the program empowers students to pursue their scientific dreams.
