Asia Cement has had its emissions reduction targets approved by the SBTi to keep warming to well-below 2°C

With the issues of global warming and climate change becoming increasing serious, Asia Cement has been devoted to the promotion of green production to lower the impact on the environment as the company announced on 30th March, 2021 that it has passed the review of Science-Based Targets initiative (SBTi ) to become the 4th cement operator which has completed carbon reduction goal setting and concretely responded to the call for keeping the global temperature rise well below 2℃. According to Li, Kun-yen, President of Asia Cement, the company has always committed itself to pursuing excellence and will apply the latest technologies in reducing resource consumption to befriend nature to achieve environment friendliness.

SBTi was jointly founded by the Carbon Disclosure Project (CDP), the United Nations Global Compact, the World Resources Institute and the World Wildlife Fund to achieve control of global warming trend by keeping temperature rise within 2°C for reduction of total carbon emissions and encourages enterprises to adopt more scientific methods for energy saving and carbon reduction.

Asia Cement fulfills its commitment to reduce carbon emission in a scientific way by setting 2019 as the base year and by 2025 the carbon intensity of Scope 1 and Scope 2 cement bonding materials in the Taipei headquarters, Hsinchu Plant and Hualien Plant will be lowered by 8%, which is equivalent of 258,000 tons of greenhouse gas reduction. To achieve this goal, Asia Cement puts forth its carbon reduction efforts in two main directions. First, the company will actively promote the circular economy, reduce the use of natural minerals and fuels and switch to high-calcium-content wastes or by-products which have been calcined in other industries as alternative raw materials and wastes containing biomass as alternative fuels. Secondly, the proportion of limestone is adjusted to reduce the use of high-carbon clinker during production through accurate scientific calculations. Taking the international ASTM C595 hydraulic cement standard as an example, the upper limit of limestone blended in cement is 15%. Part of the company’s cement for export has been produced in accordance with international standards to be in line with the world's energy conservation and carbon reduction trend.

Asia Cement is confidant in cutting carbon emission year by year for reaching the goal earlier than the schedule set by SBTi. The statistics show that in 2020, Asia Cement used 239,000 tons of alternative raw materials and fuels, reducing approximately 60,000 carbon emission in total, equivalent of an annual carbon absorption of 160 Daan Forest Parks.

Asia Cement reiterated that in May 2020, the company’s Hualien Plant won international recognition by meeting the standards of ISO 14067 Carbon Footprint of Products and ISO 14046 Water Footprint and attaining the Optimizing Level of BS 8001 Circular Business Model to become the world's first cement company to meet circular economy standards and receive certification in the carbon footprint and water footprint for cement products at the same time; it is also the first domestic cement company to fully check the carbon footprint from raw materials, processes to products based on the concept of life cycle; the company also participates in the Global Cement and Concrete Association (GCCA) and jointly pledged with 40 major cement companies in the world to realize the vision of carbon neutrality in cement and concrete by 2050. Asia Cement emphasized that the company has already established a comprehensive response strategy, and will actually do a good job in climate change management actions, implement energy conservation and carbon reduction, build green homes, strengthen ecological education, and achieve environmental sustainability.
